Annotated Bibliography: Final Draft
For this assignment, we had to pick a poem, collect credible sources, annotate those sources, and write an abstract. I picked the poem "Because I Could Not Stop for Death" by Emily Dickinson. This assignment was meant to help us write our last Composition II essay, the poetry explication paper. My intended audiences were my peers and my instructor.

The Explicator provides an interpretation of the
house in “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” by Emily Dickinson. The author
argues that the house Dickinson describes in the said poem is an above-ground
burial vault; the author also describes the symbolism of each feature. This source is credible because it was
found in a scholarly database and “The Explicator” is a well-known journal of
literary criticism. This text will support my thesis because I can use it as an
example of symbolism.

The Explicator provided
different interpretations of “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” by Emily
Dickinson. Although the author argues the poem has many conflicting
interpretations, he does not disagree with any version. This source is credible because it was
found in a scholarly database and “The Explicator” is a well-known journal of
literary criticism. I believe poetry, in general, can be interpreted in many
ways; therefore, I can use this text to support that argument in my thesis.

The Explicator provided
an explanation of “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” by Emily Dickinson. The
author argues that Dickinson was going through a spiritual search at the time
she wrote the poem. The author also believes that Dickinson realized she did
not recognize the power of death; therefore, she wrote the said poem. This
source is credible because it was found in a scholarly database and “The
Explicator” is a well-known journal of literary criticism. I will compare this
text with my other sources to obtain a better understanding of the poem and
write my thesis.

The Explicator provided an analysis of “Because I Could
Not Stop for Death” by Emily Dickinson. The author argues that the poem is full
of unanswered questions; however, he believes the poem describes Dickinson’s
three stages of life. This
source is credible because it was found in a scholarly database and “The
Explicator” is a well-known journal of literary criticism. The author also
argues that Dickinson writes about the collapse of time after death, which is
something I thought as I read the poem; therefore, I will use this information
to support my thesis.

Owlcation
describes and analyzes “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” by Emily Dickinson.
The author argues that Dickinson had written about death before; however,
“Because I Could Not Stop for Death” is her most outstanding piece because she
describes the transition from one world to another beautifully. He also argued
that Dickinson was not afraid of death. This source is credible because the
author, Andrew Spacey, is an experienced writer and poet who has published two
books, contributed to multiple magazines, and has many articles published in
the Guardian Newspaper in the UK. The author also argues that Dickinson sees
death as a getaway from the pain and evil of the earth, which is something I
thought as I read the poem; therefore, this text will support my thesis.

Abstract
The topic of my
paper will be the use of literary devices in “Because I Could Not Stop for
Death” by Emily Dickinson. I will develop my topic by addressing the use of literary
devices such as allusion, alliteration, enjambment, personification, and
symbolism in this poem. I will also use my sources as evidence to support my
points. I have already gathered five credible sources, evaluated them, and
annotated them. I have also taken notes that will help me in the future. My
working thesis statement is: Although the poem “Because I Could Not Stop for
Death” by Emily Dickinson is interpreted in many ways, one thing we know for
sure is that Dickinson used literary devices such as allusion, alliteration,
enjambment, personification, and symbolism when she wrote this poem. My
argument is true because the literary devices I mentioned before are present in
the poem. Personification occurs when Dickinson describes death as a human, alliteration
is present because she put words that begin with the same sound close together
more than once, symbolism was used when she described the house, allusion is
present when she talks about time, and enjambment is present because she cut
off many lines before they stopped.
